Today I had the honour of meeting war veteran Rambahadur Limbu, the last surviving Ghurka recipient of the prestigious Victoria Cross award, given only to soldiers who show the highest degree of valour and bravery in defense of their country. We met Rambahadur and about 50 other members of the Ghurka community at the Pentahotel for greetings and a photo opportunity before having a tour of Reading on the local number 17 bus.
The Ghurka community has had to face many challenges and their struggle for justice continues. It was really fantastic to see such a great level of support and respect for Rambahadur and the Ghurka movement as a whole. Ghurkas account for a significant part of the Park Ward community which I represent and I greatly appreciate being invited to take part in this event. As you can see from the photo, there was a very positive atmosphere and I'm thankful that I was able to take part!
