More progress on 20 mph speed limits

Having been campaigning for 20 mph speed limits in residential areas for about five years now I am delighted to announce that we have had some more progress. Officers are now looking into making: Talfourd Avenue, Melrose Avenue, Belle Avenue, Earley Hill Road and Holmes Road all 20 mph!

This is another big success for Melanie Eastwood and myself following on from getting the Council to start looking into producing a policy on 20 mph speed limits in Reading at the end of 2010.

Rob - yes I asked officers to look into this in these roads and several others in East Reading thanks to requests from Conservative Park ward Councillor Wazir Hussain, you, and Conservative MP Rob Wilson. I have had no such requests from the Labour Councillor.

I am sure you will be praising the Conservative / Lib Dem Council in your literature :-)

Earley Hill Road was not "adopted" when I last checked. ie had not been made up at the residents' expense to a suitable standard for the Council to take over future maintenance. Which is why the residents can get away with erecting no-entry signs at both ends. Be interesting to see what measures officers propose to enforce a 20mph limit in Earley Hill Road. Be interesting to know who drives along Earley Hill Road at speeds exceeding 20mph.

After this success, do you intend to negotiate for 20mph limits on Jubilee Road and on Bumpy Bulmershe?

Do you have funding identified for the civil engineering works necessary to enforce any 20mph limit in all the roads listed?

Though I wouldn't dispute that residents of this swathe of residential roads would really like considerate behaviour from everyone using them.

Sorry Christine, I remember that we decided to exclude Earley Hill Road as it is private. Yes, we have money identified for the scheme.

Yes Richard, I am pleased that the Coalition has been the more receptive to our campaign than Labour wards in the past.
